When North Sea operator’s asset in the UKCS faced severe time pressure and strict safety constraints on a high‑pressure mud line upgrade, traditional welded solutions were not an option. GS‑Hydro’s non‑welded Retain Ring ™system provided a fast, simple and reliable alternative for this critical line operating at high working pressures.

The Challenge
Our client needed to:
- Upgrade a high‑pressure mud line subject to pulsating loads, vibration and harsh offshore conditions.
- Minimise shutdown time and hot work in a congested area with strict safety and permitting requirements.
- Ensure leak‑free performance at working pressures in the hundreds of bar, with high joint integrity and long‑term reliability.
Welded connections would have extended the shutdown window, increased hot‑work risk, and required extensive NDT and potential remedial works to reinstate integrity.

The GS‑Hydro Solution
GS‑Hydro proposed a non‑welded piping solution using the GS Retain Ring ™Flange System for the high‑pressure mud line’s.
Key elements:
- GS Hydro’s non‑welded Retain Ring connections on thick‑walled pipe designed for high working pressures (up to 350–420 bar in standard applications, with capability up to 690 bar in specific cases).
- A wide range of flanges and fittings to accommodate layout constraints, including elbows, tees and adaptors.
- Fire‑safe sealing where required, delivering leak‑free performance and high joint integrity.
This approach allowed the mud line to be assembled and installed without field welding, reducing hot work and simplifying quality control.

Implementation
- Site Installation: Pipe defects were removed and prepared with GS Retain Ring grooves and associated flanges in a controlled environment using our clamshell cutting tool.
- On‑site assembly: The team installed and bolted up the Retain Ring ™ joints in the mud line area with no on‑site welding, streamlining permits and safety measures.
- Testing: The system was pressure tested to confirm leak‑free performance at the specified working pressure for the mud service.
Because the system is designed for high‑pressure hydraulic and mud/cement applications, it is well suited to pulsating loads and vibration typically seen in drilling operations.

Results
By choosing GS‑Hydro’s Retain Ring ™ system, the operator achieved:
- Reduced shutdown duration thanks to fast, weld‑free installation and fewer working phases over conventional methods.
- Elimination of on‑site welding on the mud line, lowering hot‑work risk and simplifying permitting.
- High integrity, leak‑free joints compatible with the line’s high pressure and dynamic loading conditions.
- A clean, reliable solution aligned with offshore industry requirements for critical high‑pressure systems.

If you are planning a high‑pressure mud, cement, hydraulic or water line upgrade and want to reduce hot work while increasing reliability, GS‑Hydro’s non‑welded Retain Ring ™ system can help.
